ETIAS for UK passport holders

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is an EU electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, including British citizens after Brexit. It is separate from a Schengen visa — most UK leisure trips to the EU remain visa-free, but ETIAS adds a pre-travel registration step when the system is fully operational.

Current status

ETIAS has been delayed several times. As of our last review, UK nationals visiting Schengen countries for short stays still rely on passport stamps and 90/180-day rules, but you should monitor EU official announcements before each trip. Who needs ETIAS

When live, ETIAS will apply to travellers from visa-waiver countries (including the UK) visiting Schengen Area states for tourism, business, or transit under 90 days. It does not replace national visas for work, study, or long stays.

Irish travel for UK citizens remains under the Common Travel Area and is outside this page’s scope.

How it will work (expected)

  1. Complete an online application on the official EU portal (fee expected around €7).
  2. Receive approval linked to your passport — most applications processed quickly.
  3. Present the same passport at Schengen border control; airlines may verify status before boarding.

ETIAS is not the same as the UK’s own ETA for visitors coming to Britain, nor the US ESTA.

EES — Entry/Exit System

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will record biometric entry/exit at Schengen borders, replacing manual passport stamps over time. EES and ETIAS are complementary: ETIAS is advance authorisation; EES is border recording.
