United Kingdom passport overview

Summary for all 150 published UK-outbound corridors. Stats below are computed at build from visa data files — not a global passport ranking index.

Understanding UK passport entry requirements abroad

British citizens make tens of millions of trips overseas each year, and the first practical question for almost every destination is whether a visa is required. Unlike a single global “passport score,” real-world entry rules depend on why you are travelling (tourism, business, family visit, transit), how long you plan to stay, and sometimes how you arrive (air, land border, cruise port). Border Compass tracks a curated set of UK-outbound corridors — one page per destination — so you can see a plain-English verdict before you read the long-form guide.

This overview page aggregates those corridor files at build time. It is not a clone of third-party passport indexes that rank countries by visa-free counts worldwide. Instead, it answers a narrower question: for the destinations we publish, how does a standard UK leisure trip classify today? Counts on this page update automatically whenever corridor JSON changes and the site rebuilds.

How we classify entry types

Each destination is assigned one of five verdicts:

These labels simplify complex law. A country might be visa-free for fourteen days but require an e-visa for longer stays. Our corridor pages spell out stay length, costs, and processing time; always read the full guide for edge cases such as work, study, or dual nationality.

Brexit and Europe

Since the UK left the European Union, British passport holders no longer benefit from freedom of movement in the EU. Short visits to Schengen countries (France, Spain, Italy, and most of western Europe) are generally visa-free but subject to the 90 days in any 180-day period rule across the entire Schengen Area — not per country. Time spent in Spain counts toward the same limit as time in Germany. Ireland remains a special case for UK citizens under the Common Travel Area.

Non-Schengen European destinations (for example Turkey, Ukraine before current travel restrictions, or Balkan states) follow their own bilateral rules. Our pages link to the official source cited in each JSON file so you can confirm passport validity months and return-ticket requirements.

Official sources and freshness

Border Compass is an informational site, not legal advice. Every corridor lists a primary official source (destination immigration authority, e-visa portal, or embassy) plus a last_verified date. A weekly staleness report flags corridors not reviewed within ninety days. Government pages can change without notice — during health emergencies, diplomatic disputes, or policy announcements — so treat our verdict as a structured summary that you must confirm before booking non-refundable travel.

We deliberately do not scrape commercial databases such as IATA Timatic. Editors verify against government sites using the ops runbook in the repository.

Using this page

The statistics at the top count how many published destinations fall into each verdict category. Below, you can browse the full destination list grouped by entry type or use the filterable table (with JavaScript enabled) to sort alphabetically. Each country name links to its dedicated UK → destination corridor page with FAQs, related destinations, and long-form procedural prose.

If you are comparing several countries for a holiday, start with visa-free and ETA destinations to reduce paperwork, then read passport validity rules — many states require six months beyond your return date even when no visa is needed.

What we do not cover here

This overview does not list every country in the world, only the launch corridor set maintained in our data pipeline. It does not replace UK Foreign Travel Advice for safety, security, health, or local law. It does not address non-UK passports — Phase 1 focuses on United Kingdom outbound travel; other nationalities may need different permits for the same destination.

For driving tolls, customs allowances, and combined trip checklists, see the Driving and Customs sections of the site (expanded in later waves). Trip pages will eventually aggregate visa, toll, and duty information on a single URL per destination.

Keeping your trip compliant

Practical checklist for UK travellers:

  1. Confirm verdict and stay length on the corridor page.
  2. Check passport expiry against both UK re-entry rules and destination rules.
  3. Apply for e-visas or ETAs early enough to cover processing delays.
  4. Carry proof of onward travel and accommodation if entering visa-free.
  5. Re-check the official source within a week of departure if politics or health rules are in flux.

Border Compass exists to make step one fast and trustworthy. Use the lists below to explore where your passport can take you today — then drill into each corridor for the detail that actually matters at the airport.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries can UK citizens visit without a visa?
Of the 150 destinations Border Compass tracks for UK outbound travel, 72 are classified visa-free for standard short visits. Counts change when governments update bilateral agreements.
What is the difference between visa-free and ETA required?
Visa-free entry means no visa application before travel, though passport validity rules still apply. ETA (electronic travel authorisation) means you must register online before flying — it is not a full visa but is mandatory for boarding.
Does Brexit affect UK passport visa requirements?
Yes for Europe: UK visitors no longer have EU freedom of movement. Schengen short-stay rules (90 days in 180) apply. Other regions depend on bilateral treaties — always check the corridor page for the destination.
How often is Border Compass data updated?
Each corridor shows a last_verified date and links to an official source. Run the weekly staleness report in ops to flag corridors older than 90 days.
Is this a replacement for government travel advice?
No. Border Compass is an informational guide focused on entry requirements for UK passport holders. For safety, health, and legal warnings, consult UK Foreign Travel Advice and your destination’s embassy.
